I am an independent plain language consutant living in Nova Scotia. My goal is to take complex information and turn it into a message that anyone can act on. When I write, I ask myself several questions:

  • Who is my audience?
  • What is the lowest literacy level in that audience?
  • What words do members of my audience use in everyday conversation?
  • What do I want the audience to do with the information?

I also try to make the writing friendly and fun. I always keep in mind that when we read for any reason other than entertainment reading is work. I strive to make reading my text so easy most readers won’t even realize that they’re reading.

But it’s not all about words. While I am a writer at heart, I recognize that a picture can indeed be worth a thousand words. I often suggest to my clients that they use an image instead of words. Like the writing, the image must be clear.

Browse my blog to find examples of my work and some fun signs I’ve found and how I would change them to make them clearer.
